*Civic Education News *

   -

Finland was recently rated as Europe's most resistant nation to fake
news due to their extensive media literacy, which is even taught in primary
   school. Read more here

about
Finland's best practice to tackle disinformation and fake news.
   -

Recently, the European Commission released a new report about the
progress made in developing and implementing policies fostering learning
mobility. The majority of European Education systems are rated positively
in regards to foreign language preparation and the recognition of learning
outcomes through ECTS. However, many countries still need to improve their
education system in regards to supporting the disadvantaged learners.
France, Belgium and Finland scored particularly well while Bulgaria,
Albania and Serbia have a significant need for further policy development.

   .
   -

In a public hearing held by the European Economic and Social Committee,
its members urged the EU "to adopt a much bolder stance on what it takes to
make EU democracy resilient", following the increasing exposure of
Europeans to fake news, poor quality journalism and social media content
filtered to suit various commercial or political interests. They especially
demanded to regulate social media, to develop media literacy and to support
independent quality journalism. Read more here

*Equal Rights News *

   - On the 14th of February, the 2020 edition of One Billion Rising took
place. One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence
against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities
that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. The campaign,
which launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on
the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or
raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this
adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Check out here
   <https://www.onebillionrising.org/category/blog/> to see what happened
   this year!

   - In a report published on the 19th of February, the Council of Europe
Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, calls on the Turkish
authorities to restore judicial independence and stop the practice of
targeting human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists and silencing
them by using administrative and judicial actions. The report is based on
the Commissioner’s visit to Turkey carried out in July 2019. Read more

   .

   - On the 9th of February, voters in Switzerland gave a clear message to
their government and Europe that they will not tolerate hate by voting to
extend the current anti-racism legislation to cover protection based on
sexual orientation. This will hopefully pave the way for marriage equality
and gender recognition based on self-determination in the country. Read

   .

   - On January 22 High court judge and human rights advocate Katerina
Sakellaropoulou has been elected Greece's first female president by
   parliament. Read more here

*Environmental Sustainability News *

   - The European Central Bank (ECB) was urged by the European Parliament
to make climate change the center of attention for its review of the
monetary policy strategy. Even though the resolution is not binding, it
sets a landmark of what the ECB should take into account. Read more here
   <https://www.euractiv.com/section/energy-environment/news/parliament-urges-ecb-to-put-climate-at-heart-of-strategy-review/>
   .

   - The EU heads of states and governments are currently trying to reach
an agreement on the next seven-year EU budget. As the European Green Deal’s
idea is to allocate more budget to the topic of carbon neutrality, European
lawmakers now have to decide how much money should be dedicated to it. The
initial 20% of climate funding could go up to 27-30%. Read more here
   <https://meta.eeb.org/2020/02/27/eu-leaders-fail-to-agree-on-climate-spending/>
   .

   - According to FIFA, the next World Championship should be
carbon-neutral. Given the fact that the next World Cup takes place in Qatar
where at least eight stadiums are built from scratch, it seems like an
almost unmanageable task. Taking these adverse circumstances into account,
FIFA published 22 sustainability-related objectives. One aspect is going to
be the construction of the stadiums according to the Global Sustainability
Assessment System (GSAS) which is a performance-based green building
   certification system. Read more here
