> Discussion on the future of AEGEE!
>
> On the occasion of the 15th Anniversary of AEGEE, we invite you all to
> take part in a discussion on the future of our association. This
> discussion will take place during the -- afternoon plenary session on
> Friday 5th of May --

> You can find below a text, we would like you to read carefully and to
> prepare in your local a short statement (around 300 words) on the points
> raised and the questions asked. We want all to hear how YOU see the future
> of this association.

> There will be a roll-call for all locals to come forward and make a
> statement.
> There is no discussion planned afterwards,
> only the possibility of a shorter second round. The floor is yours to
> take, and we encourage you to take this opportunity and voice your
> opinion. After all it is you, who decide on the future of AEGEE!!
>
> «After 15 years since its founding conference in Paris, AEGEE has
> undoubtedly changed a lot. Europe has changed a lot ever since. At the
> time when AEGEE was created, Western European countries did not form the
> European Union yet, but a less integrated European Community, while
> Eastern and Central Europe stayed in the Soviet bloc. In 1987 AEGEE
> declared e.g. that its "first geographical priority is the EC, where
> pro-European ideas are most developed".
>
> In the years passed we have been caught by surprise with historic events.
> After the fall of the Iron Curtain AEGEE opened up to Central and Eastern
> Europe to become a truly European organisation.
>
> Since the EGEE I conference in 1985, many AEGEE generations have passed,
> each one causing a slight change in the direction of the organisation,
> realising their ideas for projects and internal development.
>
> One initial element of AEGEE stayed the same from the very beginning, that
> AEGEE is not made up of national branches.
>
> Considering the great thematic diversity of our activities and the variety
> of its forms, at the dawn of the new millennium we are now about to ask
> ourselves if we are still what we claim to be:
>
> -a student organisation that promotes integration among young people in
> Europe, and
> -a voluntary non-governmental politically independent association that
> puts the idea of a unified Europe into practice?
>
> What are the reasons for today's existence of AEGEE? What role should we
> play? What are now our challenges, ambitions, and aims?»
