*** 20 JUNE: INTERNATIONAL REFUGEE DAY ***

More than 7100 dead refugees at Europe's borders - death by policy
FORTRESS EUROPE: NO MORE DEATHS!

On the 20 of June - the INTERNATIONAL REFUGEE DAY - the Human Rights Working Group would like to observe this Day by raising its voice against the deadly consequences of 'Fortress Europe'.

The HRWG have joined the European-wide campaign organised by UNITED for Intercultural Action. As in the past years, hundreds of NGOs around the continent took the International Refugee Day as the perfect occasion to speak out about the refugee issue. Aware of the urgent situation that many European countries are experiencing, NGOs are organizing a broad variety of activities, ranging from diverse forms of protest against detention conditions, deportation procedures and border militarisation, to awareness raising event to show the human side of the refugee issue, to promote refugees' rights and to speak out for the dignity of refugees and asylum seekers in Europe.

The HRWG sincerely hope that our contribution within the UNITED campaign will be valuable as we believe that our voice which AEGEE speaks out as the largest interdisciplinary pan-European network of students in this regard, is important in both raising public awareness in local communities, as well as at a national and European level.

The Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) of AEGEE is an independent working group within AEGEE, whose main activities are spreading information, organising and supporting projects within AEGEE on the subject of Human Rights. Its main aim is to bring human rights violations into public notice and to raise awareness of violations of human dignity in order to make sure that these crimes are not neglected or forgotten.
