Hi everybody! Your antennas have showed interest in joining the European Year Of Languages- project. It is European wide project supported by the European Comission and The Council. We talked about the issue at Agora in November in Udine during a workshop called "The Biggest Language Course Ever". Aegee wants to do its part for the EYL and we have found two activities, which could be possible to carry out. Please, read information below (preliminary plan, changes and improvements may occur. Your ideas are also very welcome) and write us your reactions. We truly hope that you are still into this and want to make one of these activities to happen in your city. You can also get familiar with EYL-sites, which you can find on I-net at http://culture.coe.fr/AEL2001EYL/ I wish you all successful New Year 2001 and hope to hear from you soon! Anne Turunen European Year of Languages The European Year of Languages is a celebration of Europe's linguistic diversity and promotes language learning and related skills. Everyone could take part in this project by organising a language course or a seminar/meeting to raise the awareness of people about learning languages. For the Language course the registration deadline is the 13th of January. For the meetings the deadline is the 2nd of March. Activity 1 Courses of Language and Culture, which will take place all over Europe in summer. Emphasis will be put not only on the language but especially on the culture of the people who speak it. This is actually nothing very new for the antennas, which already have organized language SUs.The courses will last for 14 days, 6 hours a day (4 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon). Only professional teaching stuff will be used. The organisers are free to choose the language, the level of the taught language and the teachers. A final brochure will be made in autumn in order to centralise all the results. Funding will be available in the limit of the funds coming from the European Commission. The price of the courses should not exceed the price of a Summer University. Activity 2 In cities all over Europe local committees will gather at the same time (e.g. 1 PM (CET)) people on market squares or other suitable locations for an event of app. 60 minutes. The focus will lie on languages, which are not that wide spread in Europe. So might people in Helsinki (FIN) learn Basque, people in Odessa (UKR) learn Gaelic or people in Paris (F) learn Estonian. A professional partner has to be found, for example teacher(s) he/they play(s) a decisive role as he/ they has/ have to be able to speak and entertain a big group of people. On the other hand he/ they should be native speaker(s) of the taught language and able to use modern interactive tools of language teaching. If financial means are available some highlight squares could be connected via video-transmission to demonstrate the European dimension. A cheaper solution is to set up web- cameras and bring pictures from events all over Europe together on one web page. As it should reach as many people as possible, AEGEE does not want to organise this activity alone. There is not a defined target group; everybody should be free to attend this event. On local base one can co-operate with the local authorities, universities and other NGOs. We expect to reach a group of 50.000 people+x. The number depends on which partners can be found for this project.
