AEGEE-Europe, the European Students’ Forum, calls on the European
states’ leaders to prevent a war in Iraq.
As members of
the largest European interdisciplinary students’ association striving for Peace
and Stability as one of the main fields of actions, we are deeply concerned
about the escalation of the conflict situation between the United States and
Iraq.
We strongly condemn all military actions to be undertaken
because they would violate the fundamental rights of civil society. They would
endanger the democratic development of the world and, therefore, we do not
support violence as a means of solving this conflict. We believe that the
current situation can and should be solved in a peaceful manner.
A possible
war in Iraq would have spill over effects in the entire region and therefore
would entail a global conflict.
The United States should be
deterred from undertaking aggressive unilateral action.
It seems to us that
the USA as a super power considers its economic interests in oil and war
equipment in the area more important than the destructive effects on civil
society.
Europe, especially the European Union, should evolve into
a viable power, as the EU is currently the only block capable of acting as a
counter balance to the United States. Therefore we urge the European states’
leaders to protest against the war in Iraq and vote against a military
intervention in the UN Security Council and make use of the veto right where
possible.
