: :: Yearplan Topic for 2004 - European Identity ::
Every year AEGEE focuses on a broad topic that reflects its main
stream. This topic involves all the relevant projects that entwine with
it. In 2004 the topic in focus is European Identity incorporating three
projects, each exploring the subject from a different point of view:
cultural, political, economic and human rights. The Enlargement, that
will, amongst other factors, result in mixing of populations and
identities, has put even more into question the concept of identity within
and outside the European Union and the future of National Identities. EU
Enlargement makes it a key moment to question among the youth of today,
who will build the future of our continent, the issue of their future
identity and to involve them in debating and defining the policies that
will drive it. This debate could best occur in a framework already taking
some distance from the structure of national identities, like AEGEE, being
the biggest student international organisation operating without any
national level. |

: :: Revival of strong student NGOs co-operation ::
During the past two months AEGEE has taken strong steps in
establishing co-operation links between student NGOs in Brussels and
vicinity, starting with organising an NGO reception in Brussels on the 5th
of December 2003, at which 9 different Brussels-based NGOs showed up. On
30-31 January 2004, delegates from the largest European student
associations met in Leuven (Belgium) in order to increase their
co-operation. The meeting was held under the umbrella of the Informal
Forum of International Students Organisations (IFISO), with the aim to
establish a common platform of collaboration amongst international student
organisations in order to improve their knowledge-sharing and identify
areas in which they could co-operate further. |

; :: Participatory Status at the Council of Europe ::
We are proud to announce that AEGEE-Europe enjoys now a
participatory status to the activities of the Council of Europe for
International NGOs. The resolution was introduced in order to reflect the
active participation of International NGOs in Council of Europe policies
and work programme, to facilitate INGO participation and access to the
steering committees and governmental expert committees, and other
subsidiary bodies of the Committee of Ministers. |

; :: Statement on the decision taken by the Polish Parliament ::
With regard to the decision taken by the Polish Parliament
restricting the rights of young people in Poland to candidate in the
European Parliamentary Elections by putting the minimum age of candidates
at 30 years (making it the highest age threshold in all 25 countries of
the enlarged European Union), on the 22nd of January AEGEE-Europe made a
statement concerning our position on this issue. We strongly objected to
the decision. According to the polls run on our website in January, 38% of
our members are for setting the minimum age for EO candidates for 21, and
25% for 25. |

: :: Internal Education in AEGEE in January ::
In January (10-17.01.2004) the Public Relations European School
took place in Napoli, Italy. This was an excellent event (organised in the
co-operation between the Public Relations Working Group and AEGEE-Europe
board), with experienced staff members, motivated and enthusiastic
participants and great local organization. The impact on internal
education plays a very important role in AEGEE. The great knowledge
transfer during European Schools is a base of future local successes
within AEGEE Network. In Napoli the participants got extremely motivated
and willing to use the gained PR skills at the European and local AEGEE
activities. |
