Located in the Southern Caucasus, on the
western coast of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan
occupies the world’s most important strategic crossroads between East
and West. Being a country at the center of historic Silk Road, Azerbaijan
treasures its natural and cultural diversity.
Every year on 21st of
March, Azerbaijani people celebrate the New Year - Novruz. The history
of this holiday is dates back to 4th
century B.C. It is the celebration of the vernal
equinox and the symbolic renewal of nature. Novruz is a unique holiday
uniting four elements of life. Virtually, celebrations start four weeks
before the actual day of festivity. These four weeks - or, exactly four
Tuesdays - are each devoted to one of the four elements: water, fire, wind
(air) and earth. Novruz traditions are strongly associated with fire, which
also is believed a way to purify oneself. Making fires on streets, roofs
and elevated points is wide accepted and jumping over a fire on Last
Tuesday is considered compulsory for community members regardless to their
age and sex.
You are invited to
celebrate this holiday in Baku,
capital of Azerbaijan. An unbelievable week with rich cultural and social
program will stay at your memory forever. An event full of fun and
adventures with delicious Azerbaijani dishes, traditional dance, games,
parties, visits to ancient fire worship place “Ateshgah”, mystic Yanardag
(Fire mountain) near Baku, open air Gobustan
museum with rock paintings dating primordial ages, Maiden Tower, walk in
Old City (both included in the World's Cultural Heritage of UNESCO), baot
trip in Caspian sea and more interesting things... Don’t miss this
occasion and join us in these nice days. We will begin our program with
Fire Party on 17th March and end on 21st of March with Big Novruz party.
The program is entirely
cultural and aims at introducing Azerbaijani culture to students from other
European countries. There will be one evening dedicated to presentation of
participants' countries. It will give us a unique opportunity to better
understand each other's traditions and promote diversity as a richness of
Europe.
