TRAVELLING TO AND FROM MESSINA BY PLANE

Although Messina does not have its own airport, however it can be easily reached by flying to the Reggio Calabria or Catania Airports.

Reggio Calabria is very small airport but it’s also the nearest Airports to Messina, connected through Alitalia, AirMalta and AirOne.

Catania is big airport quite near to Messina. REMEMBER AFTER 20:15 (08:15 p.m.) THERE IS NO WAY TO REACH MESSINA FROM CATANIA AIRPOIRT, REALLY NO WAY. Here a list of all the companies that actually flight to Catania airport (www.aeroporto.catania.it) with the connected airports out of italy.

Low cost:

connection from airport to Messina:

Airport "Dello Stretto" of Reggio-Calabria: take the bus "Cavallieri" to Messina and get off at Piazzale Cavallotti very near to Piazza Repubblica - Stazione Centrale of train. For the bus timetable no problem because the bus wait for the airplane. Otherwise you can take fast hydroplane of Ferrovie dello Stato (italian train company to messina) but we suggest you to take the bus, anyway the airport is so little that you can just follow the others persons or at least ask…in all my life I have never seen more than one plane at time arriving at this airport.

Airport "Fontana Rossa" of Catania: take the bus of "SAIS" http://www.saisautolinee.it (site only in italian) to Messina and get off at the last stop: Piazza Repubblica - Stazione Centrale of train, it lasts about 1 hour and 50 minutes and the cost is 7,50 euro.

Timetable

Bus from Catania Airport

6:20 9:45 10:45 11:45 12:45 14:00 16:45 18:10 19:15 20:15

Arrival in Messina 1:50 later

But please few days before you'll arrive remember me to check the time because they can change. REMEMBER AFTER 20:15 THERE IS NO WAY TO REACH MESSINA FROM CATANIA AIRPOIRT, REALLY NO WAY

Airport "Punta Raisi" of Palermo: take the bus to Stazione Centrale in Palermo and then take another bus (the last one at 18:30 and it costs 13,30 euro) or the train (the last at 20:45) to arrive at the Stazione Centrale of Messina (the ticket of the train costs from euro 10,55 to 15,24 it depends from which kind of train you choose).

Bus from PALERMO Via P.Balsamo 16 (just at the train station)

05:00 – 07:00 – 09:00 – 12:00 – 14:00 – 16:00 – 18:30 – 20:00

Arrival in messina 2:40 hours later

Cost 13,30 euro

In this case bus is faster…cause train are always in delay and they usually take 3 hours to arrive in messina….but on the other side there are a lot of trains every day to arrive in messina from Palermo (last train at 20:45 and the first one at 04:00) and it’s also cheaper. Normal train ticket cost euro 10,55…intercity trains (ICN or ICplus) cost 15,24 euro.

Bus from RomeNaplesBrindisi to Messina

From Rome: Piazzale Tiburtina

Sais bus company (so to find them search and ask for SAIS)

Departure time: 19:30 and 21:00

You will arrive in messina at 04:40 and 06:45 a.m. of the day after. Cost 40 euro.

Piazzale Tiburtina is in front of Tiburtina train station.

Tiburtina train station: another train station in Rome reachable both by metro (Metro line B - blue) or by train.

From Naples:

SAIS bus company (so to find them search and ask for SAIS)

Naples – Piazza Garibaldi (in front of train station) 23:30. Arrival in Messina at 06:45 of the day after. Cost 30 euro.

It’s the same bus that leaves from Rome at 21:00

From Brindisi:
ETNA trasporti bus company
Viale Arno (in front of the city cemetery) Departure time at 10:15 and 22:15 Arrive in Messina at 17:15 and 05:00 at Piazza della Repubblica (the same square of the train station) Cost euro 30,50

Train to Messina

Check the train information at www.trenitalia.it (also in English…you will find English button on the top-right of the page)

From the web you can also buy the ticket finding a promotion offer…in particular with “FREEDOM TO TRAVEL” it’s possible to buy ticket for travelling during night for:

Seated places from 15 euro

Couchettes (C4 and C6) from 30 euro

Wagon lits or comfort couchettes (C4 comfort) from 45 euro

Seats supply is limited and you can buy up until midnight of the day before departure (but obviously it’s better to reserve it before because it’s a very good offer and the seats finish quite early)

C4= 4 persons in the cab

C4 comfort = air conditioned and new wagon

C6= 6 persons in the cab…so obviously C4 is better

To find this special offer it’s better to check train not going to messina but to VILLA SAN GIOVANNI (in Calabria just in front of Messina…then with the same train ticket if you bought one with destination messina; or buying a special ticket of 1 euro direct in Villa San Giovanni) you can take the ferry to go to Messina. You can buy this ticket also at the bars, newspaper shop or “tabacchi” inside Villa San Giovanni train station. The ferries leave direct from the train station…you do not need to go out of the station just to change platform: go down the stairs, turn right, walk for 10-20 meters (it depends on which platform you arrive) and the ferry is in front of you. It’s better to take the bilateral ferry (the one where train can’t go in…just people and car…ask for “Zattera”) because it’s faster…only 20 minutes to arrive.

From PALERMO to Messina check the section “Connection from airport to Messina”.

All tickets must be validated in the yellow machines available in all the railway stations.
It is necessary to reserve seats on EuroStar trains; ES trains are the most expensive ones.
