News from AEGEE

A Co-Management System for Youth inside the European Institutions

On June 5th and 6th AEGEE-Europe and AEGEE-Brussels organised an event  with other youth organisations and experts to discuss the feasibility and possible structure of Co-Management in the European Institutions with youth representatives on youth issues. The conference, co-funded by the Youth in Action Programme, was hosted by MEP Hannes Swoboda in the European Parliament.
With the input of experts, the participants from AEGEE and other Youth NGOs planned for 2 days what kind of structure they would like to see, in which institution it would be and which competences it should have.
Such a structure for co-management would allow us to co-design programmes such as ERASMUS and Youth for Action from the start, co-decide on the strategic priorities of youth issues and have an influence on the allocation of budget of related issues.
The results will now be presented to the member organsations of the European Youth Forum to gain a wider support. Afterwards, the lobby process with European and national stakeholder will start. We'll keep you informed!

Eastern Partnership Project Meeting

The Eastern Partnership Project team held a two-day meeting in the CD house, with 9 enthusiastic team members. The first part of Eastern Partnership Project will come to the end in December 2013, but the team decided to continue with the second phase of the EaP Project right from January. However their calendar in 2013 is not empty either! In the end of September and beginning of October the participants of „Eastern Partnership Express” will travel from Kaunas to Chişinău via Minsk, Kyiv and Lviv by train for 10 days. 20 people will have the possibility to take part in our experience and participate in thematic discussions and workshops. From 2014 we will have new aims, a new team and new priorities. So if you are interested in the political culture and if you want to discover the role of women in EaP societies or just generally want to know more about Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia stay tuned for more informations!

Membership Growth Project

AEGEE has been selected to take part in the 2-year-long Membership Growth Project of the European Youth Forum. The project consists of a year long observation and planning period, where all the human resources and mainly the membership growth related challenges of the organization (both on European and local level) are analysed and another year of preparation and implementation of changes within an incremental process and with a bottom-up approach. After an internal AEGEE open call, AEGEE-Bratislava and AEGEE-Grodno were selected to participate in the trainings, but the intention is to involve a bigger part of our Network and to have a substantial, positive change in our organisation.

The first meeting was held in Antwerpen between 12-16 June with the participation of AEGEE, YEU, ACTIVE and YEU with the participation of various European representatives. On behalf of AEGEE, Bea (CD), Elena (HRC) and Zuzana and Lucia (AEGEE-Bratislava) worked there during the fruitful meeting.

Environmental destruction must become a crime

Do you remember the workshop of the Environmental Working Group (EnWG) about Ending Ecocide or the speech in the closing plenary of Agora Budapest by Polly Higgins? At this Spring Agora Rhein-Neckar, Prisca Merz from AEGEE-Passau and Director of End Ecocide in Europe was the person who reminded us that the main idea of their initiative is intriguingly simple: Environmental destruction must become a crime. The following interview was conducted by Laia Garcia Montufo, PR of the EnWG, during the Agora Rhein Neckar.

What if youth could participate directly in EU decisions?

This was the question that we wanted to debate at the conference held by AEGEE on June 5th and 6th in the European Parliament, where different Belgian and European NGOs had the opportunity to discuss the possibilities for Co-Management in the European institutions, together with representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and its Advisory Council on Youth, and the European Youth Forum. The event was hosted by the MEP Hannes Swoboda, who is also President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament and financed by the Youth in Action Grant. AEGEE-Brussel/Bruxelles was organising the conference together with AEGEE-Europe.

How running a marathon can help people

There were 42 students. There were 42 kilometers. And there were 42 thousands Zlotych to be collected. All to help the girl named Asia, whose unfortunate accident caused her to lose a leg. The admirable idea was born in AEGEE-Kraków and was called “42 km to happiness”. All thanks to a 42 kilometers long marathon route that our heroes decided to overpower. But let’s start at the beginning.
