Tragedy of the Mediterranean - Europe is waking up

The European Council had an important meeting to respond urgently to the migratory crisis in the Mediterranean following the recent tragic deaths. President Tusk summarised: "Saving the lives of innocent people is the number one priority. But saving lives is not just about rescuing people at sea. It is also about stopping the smugglers and addressing irregular migration".

AEGEE-Europe is deeply saddened by the tragic and ongoing events in the Mediterranean that have led to the deaths of more than 1,500 men, women, and children this year alone, and stands with the European Movement and the European Youth Forum in their calls for solidarity and a focus on human rights and security in the southern Neighbourhood. The European Commission is presenting their agenda on the issue by the 13th of May.

Updates from European Movement Assembly

At its Federal Assembly, which took place on Friday 24 April and Saturday 25 April, the European Movement International adopted a series of new political resolutions. A resolution to recognise the Armenian Genocide was passed by unanimity following fierce discussions, and other votes were held on topics including the Freedom of Movement and the Eastern Partnership. Vice-President and External Relations Director Aleksandra Kluczka was present to share AEGEE's views on the matters. The different resolutions can be found on their website.

AEGEE and partners successful at COMEM Youth Forum

During the Council of Members of the European Youth Forum, taking place on 17 and 18 April, AEGEE-Europe, represented by Paul L. Smits, had a fruitful meeting with other youth organisations from all over Europe. Two resolutions were passed on relevant topics. The resolution on employment stresses elements to realising Sustainable growth, job creation and fair working conditions. The resolution on Inclusive societies at stake points out that civic education is essential to fighting radicalisation, among other recommendations.

Furthermore, former Presdient of AEGEE-Europe, Marko Grdosic was elected for a second term in the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe. He will be co-deciding on youth matters in the Council of Europe till the end of 2017! More information on the advisory council on youth can be found here.
