In the name of Civic Education Working Group, we would like to remind you of our objectives of the current action agenda. This information may help you when planning new activities in your local.

There is one common objective for all working groups:

Organize one conference or training event on the field of expertise of our Working Group.

In addition, these are our specific objectives:

  • Support locals to organize 15 activities where young people can meet their representatives from a regional, national or European parliament to engage in a dialogue on relevant policy topics and on the inclusion of civic education on the political agenda.

  • Help 20 locals to introduce good practices to increase the environmental sustainability of activities and/or raise awareness on sustainability.

  • Help locals to organize at least 30 non-formal education activities concerning the development and importance of freedom of expression in public spaces including social media.

  • Empower locals to organize at least 20 activities for young people, including high school students, on SDGs.

In addition, you can also have a look at our Activity Plan that was formally approved by the Agora last week.

If you have any questions, comments or would like to cooperate with us, feel free to write to us at [log in to unmask] and we will be happy to help you! Next to that, we would like to introduce you to our new twitter account: please check it out here!

POLICY SPOTLIGHT

Environmental Sustainability News

  • Ursula von der Leyen, President-elect of the EU Commission, has big plans for tackling climate change and its impact. In her statement called “A Union that strives for more”. She states that she will propose a European Green Deal. Amongst others, her goal is to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent. Frans Timmermans is the Commissioner who is in charge of executing these ambitious plans. Von der Leyen is most likely taking office beginning of December, which means that the European Green Deal can be expected in early March. Read more here.

  • On October 25th, the European Union, Iceland and Norway agreed to coordinate their future actions for combating climate change. So far, the EU and the two countries are part of the EU Emissions Trading System (which limits the total amount of certain greenhouse gases that can be emitted and allows companies to trade permits for those greenhouse gases). In the future, also areas like transport and agriculture are tackled with an aligned approach. Read more here.

Equal Rights News

  • On October 16 Polish lawmakers voted in favor of a bill to criminalize “the promotion of underage sexual activity,” in a move seen by some as an effort to ban sex education. Lawmakers from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party voted for the bill to go to a parliamentary commission for further work. Read more here.

  • On 23 October Northern Ireland legalised abortion and same-sex marriages, bringing the legislation in line with the one in the UK. Northern Ireland had retained a Victorian-era ban on same-sex marriage and a near-blanket ban on abortion due to the power of the DUP and other religious and social conservatives. Northern Ireland had the most restrictive law on abortion in Europe, which forced Irish women who needed or wanted to interrupt their pregnancies to travel abroad to access healthcare. Civic Education News

  • The Council of Europe recently adopted conclusions that offer political guidance for the EU's environment and climate change policies for the period 2021 - 2030. It calls upon the European Commission to present an ambitious proposal for an 8th Environment Action Programme (EAP). They hereby build on the EU's strategic agenda adopted by the European Council this June, which insists on the urgent need to build a climate-neutral, green, fair and social Europe. Read more about the Council's conclusion here.

  • The European Commission recently published a reflection paper called "Towards a Sustainable Europe by 2030". Following the release, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) announced their discontent, stating that "if we want to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (...), we need to act now". According to them, the urgency of the climate crisis is not matched by political action. Read more here about why the Commission's Reflection Paper doesn't go far enough.

  • MEPs recently approved the EU´s budget proposal that includes more climate action funding and higher investments in sustainable technologies. More than €2 billion where added to the Commissions proposal to protect the climate.
