POLICY SPOTLIGHT

Youth Participation News

  • Intergroups in the European Parliament are platforms for MEPs to discuss particular issues with various affected stakeholders. The youth intergroup has been a decisive channel for youth NGOs to be part of a discussion and influence policy makers. In December the European Parliament formed new intergroups for its current legislative term (2019-2024). For the first time since 2009 there will be no intergroup that covers the topics of youth matters. So, young people got politically engaged and voted in the EP elections, but now their representatives are no longer interested in their voices? Read more about it here.

  • The format of the “Conference on the Future of Europe” that is planned to be held by the European Union in 2020-22 is taking a first shape. On Wednesday, 15/01 the European Parliament adopted a resolution which promises two youth agora as input generators of the conference. Read the press release here. Twelve civil society organizations - among them AEGEE - call for a Conference that makes a difference. Read the full recommendations here.

  • The Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) introduces a Youth Platform in order for youth organizations to have a more structured communication channel and opportunities to influence policy makers of the Baltic region. This goes back to an initiative by Baltic youth organizations. Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia & Sweden, as well as the EU are members of CBSS. Read more about it here.

European Citizenship News

  • EU Parliament, with 494 votes for, 147 against and 49 abstentions, backed this week a resolution setting out the Parliament's vision for the forthcoming Conference on the Future of Europe. Considering the last point of President VdL guidelines (the strengthening of our democracy) and the enthusiasm emerging from the majority forces inside the Parliament, the upcoming consultations (a youth Agora will also launched) appears to offer new perspectives to build a more united and progressive Europe. Guy Verhofstadt, of the centrist Renew Europe Group, is the most probable designated leader to take the role of Chair of the Conference. Read more here.
