*Open Letter - EU "Marshall" Plan*

AEGEE-Europe has recently co-signed *Open Letter for an EU "Marshall" Plan
for Training and Education To Avoid the Socio-Economic Collapse *to the EU
institutions asking for a massive investment in education and (re)schooling
for the labor market to be ready for the world after Corona.

*"The prognosis is all too clear: COVID-19 is provoking an unprecedented
economic crisis and unemployment wave that will be long, painstaking to get
through and expensive to resorb. The International Labor Organization has
already announced an expected loss of 12 million full-time jobs in Europe
in 2020. Without a doubt, this will put EU and national welfare systems at
risk. We also know that a systemic crisis and high unemployment bring with
them the additional risks of democratic decline and increased inequality.
We are only at the beginning of the tsunami wave but it is possible to
limit its impact by acting now..."*

*You can read the letter here
<https://you.wemove.eu/campaigns/open-letter-for-a-eu-marshall-plan-for-training-and-education-to-avoid-the-socio-economic-collapse>!*

*The Night Of Champions!*

*On Sunday May 24th - at 7 PM CEST *- you are all invited to the
celebration and *Awards ceremony of both the AEGEE Day 2020 and the AEGEE
Human Rights Days 2019*, both projects and initiatives organized by AEGEE /
European Students' Forum.

You will see the highlights of the great results of both projects, see the
European Bodies* of AEGEE involved, and to witness the new Champions and
winners of the #SustainableTrophies for both projects with a necessary
countdown.

So, will you be in?

*Check the following event <http://facebook.com/events/253338535720058/> to

   - As people are spending more time online since the introduction of
measures to contain the coronavirus, cybercrime surges with many trying to
exploit people's fears. For this reason, the European Parliament published
tips on how to protect yourself online. You can read them here

   - In a recent article written by the Council of Europe, they highlight
the significance of higher education in helping to shape the post-crisis
world by reshaping higher education itself. As higher education can help
establish the core values of democracy, human rights, the rule of law as
well as social justice we all strive for, they call for democratic civic
universities to educate empathetic students for just and sustainable
democratic societies. Read the whole article here

*Equal Rights News *

   - Both globally and in some EU countries, it has been reported that
cases of domestic violence rose by a third in the week after the lockdown
was put in place. Women in violent relationships are stuck at home and
exposed to their abuser for longer periods of time. This makes it very
difficult for them to call helplines, as the perpetrator is always around.

   Gender Equality, Evelyn Regner here

   women and men, read here
   <https://eige.europa.eu/news/coronavirus-puts-women-frontline> the
article of the European Institute for Gender Equality.

   - Hungary’s rightwing government looks likely to push through
legislation that will end the legal recognition of trans people by defining
gender as “biological sex based on primary sex characteristics and
chromosomes” and thus making it impossible for people to legally change
   their gender. Read more here

*Environmental Sustainability News *

   - The Covid-19 crisis has influenced the work program of the European
Commission with regard to the European Green Deal. Even though the timeline
will remain for more important legislations, it will be adjusted for some
topics which are considered less crucial. The updated program will probably
be published by the end of April. Click here

   - Meteorologists assume that 2020 will break heat records once again.
Chances are high that it will be in the top 5 years in terms of temperature
records or that it will even the year with the highest temperature measured
   so far. Read more here

   - Austria has made the transition away from coal as the second EU member
state after Belgium. This is another important step to reach the country’s
100% green energy goal by 2030. Nevertheless, there are still steelworks
   using coal. Read more here
