      PRESS RELEASE

16.12.2003 - World Youth Summit on Globalisation - big success!
Last week, in the heart of European Brussels, 200 young delegates from all the five corners of the world assembled together to discuss one of the challenges of the 21st Century - globalisation. Within the framework of 'Youth & Globalisation' Yearplan Project of AEGEE-Europe for the year 2003, the World Youth Summit on Globalisation took place.

For the first time in its history AEGEE-Europe as a hosting organisation embarked on a new venture to invite other international NGOs and active youths coming from all over the world to participate in the Summit. This multicultural youth dialogue produced an enriched Final Strategy Paper, which will be forwarded to decision-makers in order to convey the youth position and useful recommendations on the process of the globalisation worldwide.

Departing from an acute definition of globalisation as an 'accelerating and dynamic multi-dimensional and interconnected process that generates intertwined links affecting all aspects of contemporary life', youth delegates advocated the importance of adopting free and fair trade thus ensuring that developing countries have an equal bargaining power in international trade. All delegates cherished a global civil society endorsing cultural diversity while a sound applause was made at the recommendation that nation states need to be accountable to international law while a stronger role is envisaged for the International Organisations.

"I am proud that AEGEE has succeeded to gather such a motivated group of current and future youth leaders and engaging them in stimulating discussions to their personal development, that, hopefully, one day will reflect our world," commented President of AEGEE-Europe Adrian Pintilie.

The World Youth Summit on Globalisation enjoyed the Patronage of Baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne, Member of European Parliament and College of Europe and has received support from the World Bank. The official media partners of the Summit are Euractiv.com and Foreign Policy Magazine. The International Youth Parliament had observation status throughout the working sessions.

"This active commitment shared by all youth delegate present give us hope for an enhanced participatory society", stated Project Manager, Alexianne Galea at the Official Closure attended by World Bank and United Nations.
