Hello!

You have few more hours to apply for the Busho Festival:
                                                                           22-27 February; Szeged-Mohács-Pécs
Hurry up, ‘couse everybody is coming to Szeged!

Tired of the frozen ghosts of winter, the foggy mornings and sleepy nights? Let’s chase them away with a fantastic carnival! Folk dance, games and crazy parties are waiting for you. During the celebration you will be introduced into the history and traditions of the festival, the tastes of Hungarian dishes and the life and customs of Szeged and Mohács.

The legend about the borne of the event takes us back to the time of Turkish domination. It is said that the young men of Mohács, being tired of hiding in fear in the swampy islands of the Danube, close to the city, decided to take back their homes occupied by Turkish soldiers. They dressed in scary furs, put on masks and crossed the river on their boats on a stormy night. Scared by the devil looking like monsters and the terrible noise they made with their self-prepared tools, the enemy ran away. And the land was free again.
The Busho Festival has its roots in Balcanic traditions, but after its adoption it was slowly transformed to fit into the life of the people of Mohács. Men dressed in furs, wearing trousers filled with hay and wooden masks -originally painted with animal blood- walked from house to house to chase away the evil demons with their noise and good wishes. At the end of their way, the Bushos burnt a coffin and danced around the fire as a symbol of winter’s death and a new beginning.

Still not packing? You can’t miss this!
